Self-Sufficiency
To-Do List

-plant a vegetable garden (almost done!)
-make our own dish detergent (once ours runs out)
-buy a soymilk maker (for soymilk, tofu, and yogurt, est. 3 months)
-get chickens (est. 1-2 years)
-look into purchasing solar panels (est. 2-3 years)
-get a compost heap going (compost bin arriving in 4-6 business days)
-make our own bread (found a great 5-min recipe, will try this weekend)
-buy a scooter (est. 1 year), eventually sell one of our cars and buy a hybrid (est. 3-4 years)

Yesterday I ran into someone from the dorms. I couldn't remember his name or where I knew him from until 30 minutes after the encounter. Awkward!

We're still digging up the side yard to plant the remainder of our vegetables. I'm tired.

Yeah, I hear you can get a good chunk of the cost subsidized by the govt. Yay!

Phhbbt! I almost never make my deadlines though =P

I get all excited and into it and then I'm all "look, a pony!" and then when I'm done looking at the pony I get back into it and...well, you get the idea. I'll hopefully meet these goals since I've got Jerimiah around, and his work ethic is pretty much awe-inspiring.

Hey, me too...

This is why people like us will never be drafted into military service.

Officer: Alright men, and women, go and beat up that insurgent
People like us: Oh look something shiny. *runs off towards shiny object*

Wow! You're turning into a real eco-ist XD
btw, I wanted to let you know that the EC has a free composting class if you're interested in a learning a few extra tricks :) They're held at the co-ops on campus.

Cool! I'll look into it =)

I just like the idea of growing my own veggies (homegrown tastes better) and I like the idea of having chickens (they make funny noises) and I like the idea of making my own soy milk (that stuff is EXPENSIVE in the store). The solar panels, scooter, and hybrid car are really Jerimiah's ideas - and he's the one that found the composting info. He's mah partner in crime!

There is a small purple electric scooter sitting in my backyard that my friend wants to sell. It plugs into the wall to charge, goes around 30 mph, but it's only legal on city streets, no freeway driving. I don't know if it's the kind of scooter you're interested in, but I think she only wants around $200 for it, maybe less.

Thanks for the heads up! But Jerimiah really wants to get one that goes faster, so we can jaunt downtown with it =)

I'm looking into raising my own chickens, too. Do you need to get a permit or anything to have them?

p.s. I love your plans. I have similar plans when I get my own place. =)

Yay chickens! They're so goofy. Check the local city and county codes. Search for "poultry" to find restrictions.

They're legal in Yolo county, but you're supposed to have the coop 50ft away from any dwelling.

HOWEVER, the only way you get busted is if your neighbors report you, so if you befriend your neighbors, you're pretty much good to go. Our friends have technically illegal chickens, but their neighbors are totally stoked on the idea, so they don't have a problem.

If you haven't yet, check out http://www.backyardchickens.com and http://www.mypetchicken.com.

You should watch that show, "Living with Ed" on HGTV! He gives a lot of good tips.
